Wild, Jonathan c. 1682-1725. English criminal
who organized the thieves of London and ran
an office that, for a payment, returned
stolen goods to their owners. He was hanged
at Tyburn. Wild was the subject of Henry
Fielding's satire, Jonathan Wild the Great
1743 and the model for Macheath in John Gay's
The Beggar's Opera 1728.
